The first self-liberated African nation in the Americas.
In the early 17th century 'El Yanga', an African prince of Bran royalty, and his loyal cimarron followers, were forced into war to gain their freedom against the Spanish colonizers/enslavers in New Spain, North America (New Spain would later become Mexico after gaining its independence from the same colonial Spanish power.).
After many years of bloody warring, with very high casualties on both sides, a truce was subsequently declared and in 1618 a treaty was reached between El Yanga and the Spanish colonial government. Freedom at last!
El Yanga, his descendants, and his loyal cimarron followers had won, among other rights, their freedom, the right to self-governance, and the right to own land.
Today, El Yanga is a national hero, and the city of YANGA, Veracruz Mexico still stands proudly in his honor.
¡Viva Yanga!
